6 februari komt snel dichterbij, de eerste behandeling. Ik ben best wel nerveus. Fijn dat er eindelijk echt iets aan gedaan zal worden, maar ook heel spannend! Ik heb zojuist een update geplaatst op de crowdfundingspagina met antwoord op een belangrijke vraag. Van wat er tot nu toe is opgehaald, kan ik deze eerste ingreep al betalen. Ik ben zo dankbaar voor alle steun! š¤
Wat is tumescente liposuctie?
Die vraag wordt me regelmatig gesteld. Nu ben ik geen expert, maar ik heb het uiteraard wel opgezocht en van de arts gehoord. Ik probeer het met hun info in mijn eigen woorden uit te leggen.
Lipoedeemvet is ziek vetweefsel dat niet reageert op diƫten en bewegen. Gezond leven en behandelingen zoals compressietherapie, lymfedrainage en aangepast bewegen zijn belangrijk en blijven dat ook. Ze kunnen de klachten verlichten, maar het lipoedeemvet verdwijnt er niet van helaas.
Tumescente liposuctie is op dit moment de enige behandeling die het afwijkende vetweefsel daadwerkelijk kan verminderen. Het doel is niet cosmetisch, maar medisch en functioneel:
- minder pijn en drukgevoeligheid
- minder zwelling en ontsteking
- beter kunnen bewegen
- verbetering van kwaliteit van leven
Bij tumescente liposuctie wordt eerst een grote
hoeveelheid speciale verdovingsvloeistof in het aangedane gebied gebracht. Deze
vloeistof zorgt er ook voor dat het weefsel opzwelt, waardoor de vetcellen
losser komen te liggen en daarom veiliger en preciezer verwijderd kunnen worden
met minder risico op schade aan bloedvaten, zenuwen en lymfevaten. Dit is
vooral bij lipoedeem essentieel.
Ik kies bewust voor een behandeling bij Noordveld Clinics
vanwege hun gespecialiseerde kennis van lipoedeem, de lymfe-sparende aanpak en
de focus op veiligheid en realistische verwachtingen. Bij lipoedeem is het
lymfestelsel extra kwetsbaar. Daarom wordt met fijne canules en een specifieke
techniek gewerkt om het risico op lymfoedeem zo klein mogelijk te houden.
Tumescente liposuctie is geen ‘quick fix’. Het is een zorgvuldig medisch traject, vaak bestaande uit meerdere behandelingen (bij mij dus 4), met hersteltijd en langdurige nazorg zoals compressiekleding. De behandeling geneest lipoedeem niet, maar kan de progressie flink afremmen en het dagelijks functioneren sterk verbeteren. Het uiteindelijke resultaat ontwikkelt zich over maanden. Van mensen die het al gedaan hebben hoor ik vrijwel niets anders dan dat het het allemaal waard is!
Ondanks dat lipoedeem een erkende medische aandoening is, wordt tumescente liposuctie in Nederland niet vergoed vanuit de basisverzekering. Zorgverzekeraars baseren hun vergoedingen grotendeels op landelijke richtlijnen en het Zorginstituut, en daarin wordt deze behandeling bij lipoedeem nog onvoldoende als medisch noodzakelijke zorg erkend. De behandeling wordt door zorgverzekeraars nog te vaak als cosmetisch gezien, terwijl het bij lipoedeem juist gaat om het verwijderen van ziek vetweefsel om pijn, beperkingen en verdere achteruitgang te verminderen.
Ik hoop dat deze uitleg duidelijk maakt waarom deze behandeling voor mij geen luxe is, maar een belangrijke stap richting minder pijn en meer leefbaarheid.

What is tumescent liposuction?
This is a question I am often asked. I am not an expert, but I have researched it and consulted with my doctor. Based on their information, I will attempt to explain it in my own words.
Lipoedema fat is unhealthy fatty tissue that does not respond to diet and exercise. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and undergoing treatments such as compression therapy, lymphatic drainage and adapted exercise is important and will remain so. While they can alleviate the symptoms, unfortunately they do not make the lipoedema fat disappear.
Tumescent liposuction is currently the only treatment that can actually reduce the abnormal fat tissue. The goal is medical and functional, not cosmetic:
- less pain and pressure sensitivity
- less swelling and inflammation
- better mobility
- improved quality of life.
In
tumescent liposuction, a large volume of special anaesthetic fluid is first
injected into the affected area. This fluid also causes the tissue to swell,
loosening the fat cells and allowing them to be removed more safely and
precisely with a reduced risk of damage to blood vessels, nerves and lymph
vessels. In case of lipoedema, this is especially important.
I choose
treatment at Noordveld Clinics because of their specialised knowledge of
lipoedema, their lymph-sparing approach and their focus on safety and realistic
expectations. In cases of lipoedema, the lymphatic system is particularly
vulnerable. That is why fine cannulas and a specific technique are used to
minimise the risk of lymphoedema.
Tumescent liposuction is not a “quick fix”. It is a careful medical process, often consisting of several treatments (in my case, four), with recovery time and long-term aftercare such as wearing compression garments. While the treatment does not cure lipoedema, it can significantly slow down its progression and greatly improve daily functioning. The final result develops over months. From people who have already had the procedures done, I hear that it is all worth it!
Although lipoedema is a recognised medical condition, tumescent liposuction is not covered by basic health insurance in the Netherlands. Health insurers base their reimbursements largely on national guidelines and the Zorginstituut (Dutch Healthcare Institute), neither of which currently recognises this treatment for lipoedema as medically necessary care for lipoedema. All too often, health insurers still view the treatment as cosmetic, when in fact its purpose is to remove unhealthy fatty tissue in order to reduce pain and limitations, and prevent further deterioration.
I hope this explanation clarifies why this treatment is not a luxury for me, but an important step towards less pain and a better quality of life.
